There are widespread blackouts in several regions after powerful winds downed trees and powerlines. Hundreds of thousands of people were told to evacuate from the hardest-hit areas, while airports and schools were closed. The storm is weakening as it crosses over neighbouring Laos, but heavy rain is still expected there, and in northern Thailand.
