4:18Now PlayingIn the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), local election polls have closed in what is considered to be the first major test of public opinion since Chancellor Friedrich Merz took office earlier this year. Some 14 million residents in Germany's most populous state, NRW, were eligible to elect mayors and other local posts. The projected voter turnout is at over 58 percent - somewhat higher than five years ago. The state's mix of university cities, post-industrial towns and farmland makes it a political bellwether for Germany.
