0:46Now PlayingThe space race is on again! Humans are heading for the Moon as part of the Artemis program – a multibillion-dollar series of missions led by NASA, but with major contributions from Canada and Europe.
After un-crewed test flights in 2022, the Artemis II mission is now sending four astronauts on a lunar flyby. They'll be taking a look at the far side of the Moon for geological observations and get to view areas that have never previously been seen by human eyes.
This mission also aims to reveal the impact of deep space travel on the human body, mind and behavior, and serve as a test for the (Orion) spacecraft's performance.
The ultimate goal of the entire Artemis program is to land humans on the Moon’s surface again – this time to stay. Ice has been detected in craters near the Moon’s south pole, which could provide a source of drinking water – making the idea of humans living on the moon far more realistic.
