Israeli ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, and his Lebanese counterpart, Nada Hamadeh, have met in Washington D.C. for the first direct diplomatic talks between the two countries since 1993. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who mediated the negotiations, has called them a "historic opportunity."

Despite this, Israel continued to attack Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. The militant group also fired rockets into northern Israel. We spoke with Fawaz Gerges, Professor of Middle Eastern Politics and International Relations at the London School of Economics, for his assessment.
