A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon appears to be holding, allowing thousands of displaced Lebanese to return to their homes in the south of the country after six weeks of war.

The US-brokered truce, expected to last 10 days, has largely halted fighting between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. But the situation remains volatile. Israeli troops are still stationed in parts of southern Lebanon, and officials warn that civilians returning to the area may have to evacuate again if fighting resumes.

More than one million people were displaced during the conflict, which has claimed over 2,000 lives in Lebanon. As residents return, many are finding widespread destruction — with homes damaged, infrastructure destroyed, and uncertainty about whether the ceasefire will last.

DW’s correspondents in Beirut and Jerusalem report on how people on both sides are reacting — and whether this ceasefire could lead to a longer-term peace.
