YouTube Description
as posted by the channelFor decades, the city of Surat in western India has been the beating heart of the global diamond trade. Nearly every diamond sold anywhere in the world is first cut and polished here. But today, Surat’s diamond industry is in crisis. Western sanctions slowed it. Now the US-Iran conflict has made things worse. Rough diamonds are harder to come by, exports have fallen sharply, and thousands of workers are losing their livelihoods. Some have been pushed to the brink.
DW Correspondent Adil Bhat travelled to Surat to meet the workers and factory owners caught in the middle of a crisis not of their making.
