2:43Now PlayingHussam Abu Safiya, a well-known Gazan doctor, has been held by Israel for more than a year and a half without charge or trial after he was arrested in a raid on the hospital he led. Israel accuses him of being a member of Hamas on the basis of "classified information," a claim Hamas and the Gaza health ministry deny. This week, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, a panel of independent legal experts, declared Abu Safiya's detention "arbitrary," calling for his release. It also said the case “may indicate a widespread or systematic practice of arbitrary detention in the country.”
