Dozens of Mali soldiers killed in major al-Qaeda ambush | DW News

Dozens of Malian soldiers have been killed after their military convoy was ambushed in northern Mali in one of the deadliest attacks on the country's armed forces in recent months.

The assault was claimed by JNIM, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group, alongside the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a separatist movement operating in northern Mali. Footage released by JNIM appears to show captured Malian soldiers following the attack.

The ambush raises fresh questions about Mali's security strategy under the country's military junta. Since seizing power, the government has ended military cooperation with France and other Western partners while deepening defense ties with Russia. Despite that shift, Islamist militant groups continue to expand their operations across the Sahel.
