An Illinois woman was arrested in Hawaii for using a fake COVID-19 vaccine card, according to a local news report.
Chloe Mrozak, 24, was arrested at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Oahu and charged with a misdemeanor for falsified vaccination documents. Authorities say that she used the fake vaccine card to bypass the state’s mandatory quarantine for unvaccinated travelers, reported KITV 4, an ABC News affiliate in Honolulu.
The counterfeit card said that she received the “Maderna” vaccine, rather than the Moderna vaccine, and that she got the shot from the National Guard in Delaware.
Hawaii’s Safe Travels Program flagged the card and found that the hotel she listed didn’t have a reservation under her name, according to NBC Chicago. Officials said they tried to reach Mrozak at the hotel and through other information she provided in travel documents, but they couldn’t reach her.
Hawaii authorities then contacted Delaware’s state health department, and an immunization official said the state wasn’t giving vaccines using National Guard troops. Delaware also had no record of Mrozak’s vaccination, NBC Chicago reported.
Mrozak was arrested when she arrived at the airport for her flight home, and she told investigators that she paid for a vaccine at her doctor’s office. If convicted, she could face up to a year in prison and up to $5,000 in fines, KITV 4 reported.
Under Hawaii’s Safe Travels program, unvaccinated visitors to Hawaii must self-quarantine for 10 days upon arrival.
The state has seen a spike in COVID-19 cases during the past month. Gov. David Ige has asked tourists to delay their vacations until November to reduce the burden on the health care system.
“I have asked that all nonessential travel for residents and visitors to Hawaii be delayed or curtailed through the end of October,” Ige told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser last week.
“I’ve been on calls with all the airlines, and I’ve talked with the hotel industry to support this requirement,” he said. “I think it’s important that we reduce the number of visitors coming here to the islands.”
