The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is a leftist Indigenous movement that emerged in southern Mexico, primarily in the state of Chiapas. It became internationally known in 1994 when it launched an uprising against the Mexican government, protesting economic inequality, Indigenous marginalization and the impact of neoliberal policies such as NAFTA. Named after Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, the EZLN combines Indigenous traditions with anti-capitalist and democratic ideals. While it began as an armed movement, it later shifted its focus toward peaceful resistance, community self-governance and global activism through media and grassroots organizing.
