Welcome to this clip of EYL featuring a special guest, Tommy Walker Jr., and Sean Xavier Williams the visionaries behind the iconic brand Detroit VS Everybody (DVE). In this clip, Tommy sits down with our hosts Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings to share the incredible journey of how a simple t-shirt line turned into a global movement.

### **Episode Highlights:**

- **Origins of Detroit VS Everybody (DVE):**

Tommy reveals how DVE started in 2012 as a t-shirt line with a mission to change the narrative of Detroit. From his initial days as a graphic designer working with big labels like Interscope, Def Jam, and Jive, to branding big names like Big Sean, Wale, and Mike Posner, Tommy's creative genius knew no bounds.

- **Inspiration Behind the Brand:**

The story takes an interesting turn when Tommy recounts his trip to California for a project with Interscope. It was there he saw the front-page news about Detroit's then-mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, embroiled in a scandal. The distance from home made him realize how negative perceptions about Detroit were pervasive even far away from the city. Fueled by the desire to alter this perception, Tommy returned with a chip on his shoulder, determined to spotlight the real creative revolution brewing in Detroit.

- **Early Struggles and Breakthroughs:**

Along with his best friend since kindergarten, Sean, Tommy bought a failing screen printing company in 2011. Despite their ambitious dreams, they soon discovered the high costs of manufacturing. After some setbacks, Tommy's breakthrough came when he moved the equipment to a loft and lived with it, dedicating himself fully to making the brand a success. The first Detroit VS Everybody shirt was born, marking the beginning of what would become a cultural phenomenon.

- **First Exposure and Viral Growth:**

The brand really took off when a rapper friend wore the shirt to a performance and started spreading the word. This grassroots marketing strategy led to a snowball effect, gaining the brand immense popularity and making it an integral part of Detroit's identity.

Join us in this engaging conversation as Tommy Walker Jr. unveils the story behind Detroit VS Everybody and sheds light on the mission to not only change Detroit's global image but also to inspire pride and unity among its residents.
