Local teen takes gold in 3000-meter race at Junior Olympics

IDAHO FALLS – STANDUP -- From training on his hometown track at Bonneville High School to competing in Kansas, one local 15 year old ranks as one of the fastest teens in the nation.

SOT: “I was happy to be there,” Stetson Moss says.

VO: Stetson Moss and his family just returned from the 2017 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championship.

SOT: “It’s almost surreal to see him competing against top people in the nation and just come out number one just a few days ago. That’s just amazing, but he puts in the work,” father Daryl Moss says.

VO: Moss took first in the 3000-meter race and second in the 1500 at the major competition.

SOT: “The finish line in the 3000 is when I knew I won, in the 3000 second place was 0.08 of a second behind me,” Stetson says.

VO: The runner even beat the times of those in the age division above him with a time of 9:39.7. For the 1500 a 4:05.7. His secret to super speed?

SOT: “Usually I focus on my strategic moves,” Stetson says.

SOT: “Most of the time I try to eat healthy, salads, fruits, vegetables, good, lean meat,” Stetson says.

VO: Stetson is inspiring other rising stars in his family like his sister Jessica who also competed at the Junior Olympics.

SOT: “I usually think just go for the gold,” Jessica says.

VO: The thirteen-year-old ranks 5th in the nation amongst other 7th grade runners and she and her brother train together.

VO: For Stetson he has high hopes for his future.

SOT: “Hopefully someday I want to be running in the Olympics, but that’s a ways off,” Stetson says.
