TETON CANYON, Wyoming — The closure for tent camping and soft-sided campers due to bear activity in the Teton Canyon area has now been lifted.

The U.S. Forest Service Caribou-Targhee National Forest posted on Facebook that staff confirmed there has been no new bear activity and all closure signs are being removed.

The closure was put in place due to an aggressive bear that has since been removed from Teton Canyon.

On June 10, a man was pushed out of his hammock by a black bear. He was able to get to his car while the bear destroyed the hammock and sleeping bag. The bear then tried to enter an occupied tent before it was finally scared away. No one was injured.

Wyoming Game and Fish responded the following day and placed a trap in the area. After the bear did not return to the site for three consecutive nights, Game and Fish pulled its trap on June 14.

Visitors are reminded to be bear aware and to properly store all attractants in bear-proof storage containers or within vehicles when unattended.
