If you’ve been to the Bonneville County Courthouse lately, you may have seen a bench outside the exit doors. We recently received an email with the details behind the bench. It said:
IFPD Front Desk Officer Gary Allen has been with the police department for about a year. Citizens will go to his desk to get their fingerprints taken or to request an officer to come speak with them. Gary is always busy cleaning up and organizing the workstation, fixing things we never realized were broken, and he makes the BEST popcorn for his coworkers just to brighten their day!
This past fall, Gary noticed an old, wooden, worn-out bench shoved in a corner near the Courthouse entrance and when he took a closer look at it, he saw that it was the K9 Rik Memorial Bench that had been built by Retired IFPD Cap. Clements in 2002 (with materials donated by Home Depot) as a tribute to the BCSO fallen K9 Hero.
Unbeknownst to anyone, Gary reached out privately to Sheriff Hulse and asked his permission to restore the Memorial Bench. County citizens had mistaken the planter boxes on the sides for ashtrays, and the wood finish had become weathered and worn. Very few people knew he had taken up this project to bring the Memorial Bench back to its full glory, as he was doing this purely out of the goodness of his heart, and I feel the amount of time and effort he has dedicated to this labor of love over the past months deserves to be recognized and shared.
The new memorial plaques displayed on the bench include K9 Rik’s heroic story, and the bench was returned to the Courthouse courtyard in time for the Peace Officer Memorial Service.
We decided to thank Gary for his hard work on restoring the bench and surprised him for Feel Good Friday. Watch the video in the player above!
