A police chase turned into a scene out of an action movie Wednesday afternoon when a fleeing driver launched a car over the rising University Bridge in Seattle to evade arrest.
The chaos began around 12:20 p.m. when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle with a stolen license plate near 10th Avenue East and East Boston Street. Instead of stopping, the driver sped through residential streets, weaving through traffic until officers lost sight.
Minutes later, the vehicle was spotted again, stalled in traffic on Eastlake Avenue East as the University Bridge began to lift. Officers moved in for a high-risk stop — but the driver had other plans.
According to police, the suspect suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic, smashed through a safety gate, and accelerated onto the partially raised bridge. The car went airborne across the gap, miraculously landing on the opposite side before tearing away northbound.
The dramatic escape ended shortly afterward when officers located the abandoned car, heavily damaged, near Pasadena Place East.
No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.
