Dr. Gerhardt Konig bowed his head and put his hands over his eyes as he learned he was guilty of attempted manslaughter.
The doctor is accused of killing his wife, Arielle Konig, while on a hike in Hawaii last year. He was charged with attempted murder, but argued he was defending himself when she attacked him.
In Hawaii, if jurors believe a defendant committed attempted murder but was under the influence of an extreme mental or emotional disturbance, they must reduce the charge to attempted manslaughter if they believe there was a reasonable explanation for the disturbance.
Jury foreperson Makalapua Atkins told reporters that jurors believed the relationship Arielle had with a coworker was sufficient to cause “an emotional disturbance.”
“At the end of the day, when it comes down to it, she was hit in the head. And a head injury can be serious. And that’s a very deadly part of the body," Atkins said.
Konig could serve up to 20 years in prison. Had he been convicted of attempted murder, the judge could have sentenced him to life behind bars.
Arielle was not in the courtroom when the verdict was read.
Dr. Konig will be sentenced on August 13.
