Hannukah is my favorite festival. There's so much light. And every day, we light a candle. And the kids gather around and play and we sing songs, and it's about hope and faith and positivity. At least that's the way that I see it.
And what's going on right now in the world is horrifying. And that's why I'm lighting these candles with you. ESPECIALLY if you're not Jewish.
You know, I wrote a piece called, "I'm that Jew", and that was to the Jewish people. A lot of people thought it was about antisemitism - and it was - but it wasn't to educate those of the non-Jewish faith about antisemitism.
It was to my community. And it was about letting them know that they're not alone. I'm that Jew. You're that Jew. We're all that Jew.
And like anyone, any culture, race, religion, those who share a heritage - we rock. I really do believe that we do, like so many others around the world.
But you don't have to be Jewish to be that Jew. I think you just have to believe in light. And that the light will conquer the darkness.
The antisemitism that we're seeing and the attacks that we are seeing everywhere should bother you if you're not Jewish AS MUCH as it bothers us. We said 'never again' after the Holocaust. But what we've been seeing around the world, we're seeing again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again.
New Jersey. Pittsburgh. Monsey. Hampstead in London. Swastikas.
Not never again. But again and again.
Enough is enough.
It's not on us to go after antisemitism. It's on you to go after antisemitism.
I read a post from my friend Carl today. A good friend of mine who lives in the States. he's going to synagogue, looking over his shoulder. Watching. Scared to just do this. Do what I'm doing.
We're all that Jew.
So I'm lighting this last candle on behalf of my family. On behalf of my people. On behalf of all people who are good. And who believe in light.
I'm lighting this for you. And I'm asking you to NOT be quiet and to NOT just hope that it will go away - because it won't just go away. It's not just going away.
I'm not a practicing Jew. I'm pretty secular. But I love my heritage. And I love my people, for better, for worse.
