Netizens angry over a scene in ‘Oppenheimer’ in which Cillian Murphy talks about the Bhagavad Gita

Christopher Nolan’s latest film ‘Oppenheimer’ has sparked controversy over a scene in the film that shows J Robert Oppenheimer, played by actor Cillian Murphy, referring to the Bhagavad Gita while having sex with Jean Tatlock played by actress Florence Pugh. In the scene, Tatlock asks Oppenheimer about a phrase from the Hindu scripture which she sees on his shelf and the latter says that it translates to ‘I am become death, destroyer of worlds’ before the two get intimate. Several netizens have criticised Nolan on Twitter for ‘disrespecting the Gita’. A user wrote, ‘Having sex while reading holy book of Bhagavad Gita and disrespecting the bhagavad gita, playing with Hindu sentiments not acceptable what is censor board doing out there’ whereas another one stated that it is the director’s fault and wrote ‘Nothing significant can be done by censoring the scene. At least they can show the reference to Gita in a more neutral context. That's the least they could do :( #BoycottOpenheimer’. The founder of Save Culture Save India Foundation wrote a long letter, part of which read ‘We do not know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on life of a scientist. But this is a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus…’ Further, he also urged Nolan to remove the particular scene from the film.
