She not only essayed tragic roles on screen, but her real life also went through many upheavals. Yes. Despite being one of the most sought-after actresses in the Hindi film industry, she struggled financially in her last days. An old interview of filmmaker Bimal Roy's daughter, Rinki Roy Bhattacharya, has resurfaced on social media wherein she revealed that the financial condition was so bad that the 'Pakeezah' actress' family couldn't even afford to pay the hospital to release her dead body. During a conversation with Rediff in 2014, Rinki said, 'When this actress of high caliber, the reigning Goddess of cinema, breathed her last on the afternoon of March 31, 1972, at 3:25 pm in St Elizabeth’s nursing home, she did not have Rs 3,500 required to release her body.' Rinki further shared that the doctor had to step in and pay so the family could bury the remains. 'It was a miracle when her physician bailed out the family', said the filmmaker's daughter.
