Why Ranbir Kapoor's film can't be compared to Amitabh Bachchan's classics: Ram Gopal Varma explained

Ram Gopal Varma recently defended Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s latest film ‘Animal’ starring Ranbir Kapoor which has been facing massive criticism for its portrayal of brutal violence and misogyny. In a recent interview, the filmmaker asserted that films do not influence society while giving examples of hits like ‘Sholay’, ‘Satya’ and ‘Mad Max’. During an interaction with News9 Live, Varma reportedly said ‘When you saw ‘Mad Max’, nobody started going on bikes in high speed. ‘Sholay’ is the biggest hit. Nobody became a dacoit. Because ‘Satya’ worked, nobody became a gangster. It’s a stupid argument to say a film can influence. At most, it can influence clothes or hairstyle.’ Further in the same interview, RGV called ‘Animal’ the ‘most original’ film in Indian cinema history, and described Sandeep Reddy Vanga as ‘the highly commercial version of Anurag Kashyap’. Meanwhile, speaking about 'Animal', the film is a blockbuster success and has so far earned over Rs 755 crore at the worldwide box-office. In the movie, Ranbir has essayed the role of an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his emotionally unavailable father, played by Anil Kapoor. Apart from Ranbir and Anil Kapoor, the action-packed flick, also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles.
