In this compelling episode of The Faith Roundtable, host Josh Burtram interviews Dr. Mark Glanville, an Old Testament scholar and jazz pianist, about his transformative new book Preaching in a New Key. Together, they explore what it means to preach faithfully in a post-Christian, post-truth culture where many people approach faith with a mix of doubt and disillusionment.
Dr. Glanville presents jazz as a metaphor for preaching—calling for improvisation rooted in deep tradition, relational wisdom, and emotional intelligence. They discuss how to preach the Bible’s most controversial texts with care, how to form beautiful, justice-oriented communities through the pulpit, and why communal application may be more faithful than individualized sermons. Plus, hear how to reverse the flow of a sermon to help skeptical listeners rediscover the beauty and wisdom of Scripture.
Whether you're a pastor, preacher, or curious skeptic, this episode offers fresh language, deep insight, and practical wisdom for navigating faith in a shifting world.
