In this episode of The Faith Roundtable, Pastor Josh Burtram talks with theologian, philosopher, author, and ordained minister Dr. Jonathan “JD” Lyonhart about his book Zeus Was an Atheist: An Odd Retelling of the Moses Story.
JD Lyonhart retells the story of Moses in a creative, philosophical, and theologically rich way, using the Exodus story to explore some of the biggest questions of faith: Who is God? What does “I AM” mean? Can morality exist without God? What makes the God of the Bible different from Zeus, Odin, or other gods of the ancient world? And why does it matter whether God is simply the strongest being in the universe or Being itself?
Josh and JD discuss the difference between God as a powerful creature and God as the ground of all reality. They explore why Zeus, in classical mythology, is still a created being within the universe, while Yahweh is not one being among many but the source of being itself. This changes how we think about atheism, idolatry, morality, justice, miracles, and the nature of divine revelation.
