Brown v. Board of Education was a “lightning bolt” to segregationists and white supremacists. But the Supreme Court’s decision did not bring their resistance to an end.

Jemar Tisby explains how segregationists organized to preserve racial separation through “Black Monday,” the Southern Manifesto, and a coordinated strategy known as “massive resistance.” Their plan was direct: if enough states, schools, and communities openly rejected the ruling, they believed the federal government would be unable to enforce it.
