YouTube Description
as posted by the channelTired of spending all your time chasing your cows down the road?
In this session of "Designing The Landscape," Joel Salatin reveals his systematic approach to farm infrastructure, starting with livestock control. Stop worrying about making mistakes and begin your design with "the givens"—installing permanent fences around critical areas like your house, yard, and vulnerable riparian zones or steep hillsides.
Salatin guides you to design all-weather access lanes, suggesting they be at least 16 feet wide to accommodate machinery and ensure animal comfort. While physical fences are necessary for boundaries, rely on temporary electric fencing for internal control. A core principle is achieving field homogeneity by following the terrain, such as a ridge line, to separate southern (hot/dry) from northern (cooler/slower) growing aspects.
The most crucial advice for beginners: keep internal fences temporary for three years. If you haven't moved a temporary fence in that time, then it’s ready to be made permanent. This process ensures function drives the form for an easy flow of livestock.
