Underneath all the shouting online, Americans DO NOT want political violence. As someone who grew up LDS and learned a lot from that experience, I'd like to unpack how the faith can prime some people for radicalization- in any direction. And it's not just Mormonism- a lot of how the LDS church got this way was by doing its best to assimilate into America's larger conservative religious culture.

At the same time, right-wing leaders were quick to blame Mormonism for fostering the recent shooting, because it's... too far left? That'll come as news to anyone who's actually been Mormon. And it shows a growing rift in the traditional ties between the LDS church and conservative politics.

I'm working off the official narrative of the killing that's presented in the charging documentsAs a trial goes forward, we'll likely learn more about how well this official narrative is supported by the evidence.
