One of the biggest takeaways from the ongoing Madison Cawthorn saga is the fact that Republicans had absolutely no problem with the horrendous remarks and actions of the young Representative UNTIL he called out his own party. That's emblematic of a larger problem within the GOP itself - extremism is fine, but calling out your own members is never ok. Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

You know, something still bothers me about this whole Madison Callthorne debacle, saga, drama, whatever you want to call it. But it was recently very eloquently. I might add, put into words by none other than conservative commentator, Charlie Sykes, and after reading, what Sykes had to say, I realized what was bothering me about this the most. And that is conservatives. Didn't give a about what Madison cath thorn said or did any of ex his extremism, any of his past lies. None of it mattered. The only thing that mattered was when he made these claims about, you know, the sex parties and the drug abuse about Republicans themselves. At that point, they lost their collective minds and said, by God, we gotta do something about this kid. Let me read what Charlie Sykes had to say. It wasn't the tree punching his racist website, the lying about his accident and his admission to the Naval academy. It wasn't his incitement of the January 6th insurrection, the allegations of sexual misconduct, his threats of violence or his accusation that V DeMar Linsky was a thug. Apparently none of that was enough to shake Kevin McCarthy's trust in the flamboyantly reprehensible, young Congressman, but now the G O P house leader is shocked. Shocked to discover that Madison Callthorne is a liar, a crack pot and an all around deplorable human being. And all it took was a few allegations about orgys and key bumps of cocaine.

Again, that is conservative commentator, Charlie Sykes writing those words, and he is 100% right. Madison Callthorne before the dude even came into office was facing massive allegations about lying, uh, about his admission to the Naval academy. But more importantly to me lying about the very accident that paralyzed him like that was all already open record. We all knew what happened. And the kids sat there are lying to people about it, trying to gain even more sympathy, which you didn't need to do, cuz you're gonna get enough sympathy off of that already. It was a horrendous experience that nobody should go through no matter how extreme and radical they are, but none of it mattered. The only thing that matters is that he embarrassed Republicans by possibly exposing, you know, what actually happens behind the scenes in Washington, DC, which to be honest is not even that big of a deal.

As long as it's consenting adults, it doesn't bother me the hypocrisy, however, would bother voters. Some of them to a probably very small degree. And that's what they can't have. Oh God, no, not now, not in a midterm year. Of course. So he has to be punished and punished. He shall be because apparently more and more Republicans, including North Carolina, Republican Senator Tom Tillis are now starting to back his primary campaign challenger they've had enough, just don't want Kath thorn around anymore. It was totally fine up until about a week or so ago, but suddenly all things changed. Uh, he here's what it is. This is what Tillis says. It comes down to focus on the district producing results for the district. And in my opinion, Mr. Callthorne hasn't demonstrated much in the way of results over the last 18 months. Well, technically you're not wrong about that, but that was an accurate statement a month ago.

It was an accurate state three months ago. So, so where were you then? Tillis? You, you didn't care at that point, right? It was only until he embarrassed Republicans by possibly again, spilling secrets. Now he's admitted he exaggerated some but other Republicans are now starting to speak out and saying, yeah, this is kind of true. So who knows what to believe at this point? But Madison Callthorne is in trouble. Electorally speaking. Now that he's off Republicans by publicly embarrassing them, he can embarrass himself all he wants. They're not gonna say a word, but once that embarrassment spreads to the rest of the party, then your days are numbered.
