Exhausted Fact Checkers Had To Stop Counting Trump's CPAC Lies

Donald Trump gave his big speech at CPAC on Saturday night, and he told so many lies that fact checkers eventually had to give up counting. CNN's fact checkers were able to put together a list of some of the worst lies, but even they admitted that they couldn't get to all of them. The real problem isn't just that Trump lies (we all know he does) - the real problem is why his base is so desperate to hear his lies and believe them. Farron Cousins discusses this.

Donald Trump, as we all know, gave his, uh, rousing speech to a half full crowd at CPAC on Saturday evening, speaking for one hour and 45 minutes. So a grand total of about 105 minutes according to fact checkers at CNN during that time, he told no fewer than 23 lies, 23 lies that they chose to debunk. As CNN pointed out, that's far from the total. It turns out that Donald Trump told so many lies in 105 minutes, that the fact checkers actually had to stop keeping track so that they could work on debunking the lies that they had already caught. I think about that for a second. 23 lies that they debunked, and that's not all they said. You know, they couldn't keep up with how many lies he was telling, which comes to nobody's surprise. The guy while in office told more than 25,000 lies in four years.

But even if it were only 23 lies in 105 minutes, you're still looking at one lie every four minutes. And what, 20 seconds? Basically 25 seconds. So every couple of minutes, another major lie from Donald Trump. And it's not small things like, oh, I have the biggest crowd sizes ever. These are lies that actually matter. Uh, they're lies about things that are also, by the way, verifiably false like lies that people can look up and see. Wait a minute, that's not true. Here's a few. I'm not gonna tell you the lies. I'm just gonna tell you the things he lied about. Um, because, you know, we don't have the battery life on the cameras to go over all the lies. Uh, crime in Manhattan, the National Garden, Minnesota, uh, his own executive orders while he was president, uh, the alleged vandalism in the, uh, city of Portland, Russia, Ukraine, nato, nato again, NATO again, the Pulitzer Prize Committee, different things President Biden has done.

The list is almost endless and it's incomplete because the fact checkers again, couldn't even keep up. The man was just a lie machine up there on stage that the fact checkers eventually had to be like, screw it, I give up. I can't even handle this anymore. But it's not that Trump lied. I mean, that's kind of the understood thing. Like whenever Trump gets up and gives a speech, we know he is gonna lie. And I know a lot of people are probably thinking, all politicians lie. Yeah, they do, but nobody does it quite as frequently as Donald Trump. Even George Santos is probably looking at that like, wow, I've got a lot to learn from this guy.

So the problem is not that he lied, the problem is that that crowd ate it up. The crowds at his rallies eat it up. They seem to enjoy being lied to. That's the problem because the fact checkers can call out his lies all day long. Anyone in that audience could pull out their phone real quick, look up what he's saying and be like, wait, hold up. That's not true. But they don't care. Instead, they believe that the fact checkers are the ones who are lying and that anything that comes out of Trump's mouth is the absolute hand of God truth. That's the problem. And we have to break that cycle. And I know there's plenty of non-Trump Republicans who feel the same way. They'll, they'll believe whatever lies their favorite politicians tell them. There's people on the left who believe that their party can do no wrong, and we have to cut that.

But before we can even get to those problems, we have to deal with the fact that we have a, you know, sizable chunk of the Republican party that clearly enjoys being lied to. And if we can't fix that issue first, then nothing else matters. Cuz these people will believe whatever the next charlatan who comes aboard, tells them, and it'll just be a cult of whoever the next person is. Eventually Trump will no longer be here, and they will gravitate towards somebody and they will not care how frequently they are lied to, how easily, uh, uh, they could verify that these statements are false. They won't do the work and they won't believe. The people who do the work, they want a hero and they don't even care if that hero lies to them every couple of seconds while they're speaking.
