Trump Appointed Judge Gives Capitol Rioter A Break Because He Wants To Be A Cop

A Capitol Rioter that was arrested alongside members of a far right extremist group has been let off easy by a Trump-appointed judge, partially because the young man says that he wants to be a cop someday. The man traveled across state lines to participate in the riot, and he was caught using bear spray and helping to steal a police shield (theft of government property) but the judge decided that these weren't all that bad and gave him just 60 days of home detention. A Trump appointed federal judge has decided to go easy on a Capitol Rioter, who pleaded guilty to multiple different charges, including by the way, carrying bear spray during the Capitol Riot. But part of the reason the judge has decided to go a little easy on this individual is because by golly, they were only 19 years old when they stormed the Capitol. And, you know, one little mistake at 19 shouldn't define the rest of your life, even if that mistake happens to be trying to overturn the results of a national, federal election. Yeah, I mean, who among us hasn't done that in their youth? Right? You know, youthful indiscretions are one thing. Participating in what could be classified as an insurrection against the federal government. I don't know. That kind of seems serious, especially when you look at the facts of this case. You start to realize why this Trump appointed judge's decision is particularly disgusting.

The judge, even though prosecutors had recommended nine months in federal jail for this individual by the name of Tyler Bensch, the judge decided to do 60 days of home detention during which Mr. Bensch is gonna be allowed to go to work. So it's not even really home detention, cuz he is still gonna get to leave to go to work. Um, and then two years of probation cuz he was 19 at the time of the Capitol Riot. And, you know, let's not let that define their lives. The judge said this, you participated in a national embarrassment, you came ready for trouble. I'm giving you this break because of your age. This doesn't need to define you or your life. So the judge admits like, man, you showed up and you were ready to, you know, knock some heads, right? Oh boy, that was terrible. But ah, boys would be boys. Right?

Let me read you this, this from NBC News Bensch was arrested in August alongside members of the B squad who were associated with the far right 3% movement and Guardians of Freedoms, as well as Jeremy Legget, a far right extremist who ran unsuccessfully for a congressional house seat last year. Bensch pleaded guilty to disorderly and disruptive conduct on restricted grounds, along with theft of government property, admitting that he helped carry a stolen police shield from the grounds of the Capitol. In an interview with the FBI after his arrest Bensch said B Squad members took part in firearms training and hand-to-hand combat training ahead of the attack. Take part in the Capitol riot. You went there with intent, you carried bear spray with you according to prosecutors. And the judge says, ah, two months house arrest with, you know, very lenient, you know, restrictions, letting you leave the house to go to work and whatnot. Yeah, that's, that should be enough for this man to learn his lesson because after all, as Ben's lawyer said, he wants to have a career in law enforcement. And honest to God, with his far right extremist connections, that's not surprising at all. That's the least surprising part of this story. But what gets me is that his lawyers said that he didn't have the maturity to understand what he was getting into. And he carries great remorse for what he did that day. And sure he was crying in the courtroom, didn't speak, but he cried as the sentence was handed down. You admitted over here in this quote, I just read that you participated in firearms training, you participated in hand-to-hand combat training, combat training. And that lawyer's gonna sit there, pretend like we didn't know what he was getting into. This is sick. This ruling is beyond disgusting. The behavior of this individual is disgusting, but leave it to the Trump appointed judges to protect Trump supporters. And that's why we're left with this ridiculous joke of a prison, not even a prison sentence.
