Exclusive Look: Rivian's One-of-One R1S Quad Monterey Edition With Chief Designer Jeff Hammoud

Chief Design Officer Jeff Hammoud takes us inside the highly exclusive Rivian R1S Quad Monterey Edition, the brand’s first-ever "one of one" vehicle created under the new "Studio Originals" series. Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, the primary goal of this concept was to "stretch the brand" into a more upscale perspective while maintaining its rugged and inviting core feeling.

The exterior is finished in a unique Monterey Silver paint, which shifts color from champagne to silver to gray depending on the light. Built on the Rivian R1 Quad—Rivian's top performance model—the Pebble Beach Edition delivers zero to 60 in 2.6 seconds and a quarter mile in 10.5 seconds.

The interior is entirely bespoke and designed to feel more like a living space. The Olive Ash wood trim features patterns created by a fungal infection; a material typically rejected in mass production because it's difficult to match. By using this perceived "defect" and celebrating it, the Rivian team seized an opportunity to be more expressive, test new ideas, and gather critical customer feedback without the constraints of mass production.
