Freshman Brett Green Jr. was in a 7-on-7 tournament at L.D. Bell High School Saturday when he was knocked out cold.
The passing only game is meant to be non-contact.
Green, a defensive back, took a shoulder to the temple while trying to defend a pass and went down.
He was paralyzed and unresponsive.
The 15-year-old was rushed to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth where his parents were told he might not make it through the night.
He was on a respirator in the ICU and unresponsive.
However, Green made tremendous strides in his recovery and by this afternoon he was able to stand and take a few steps.
His parents say he shocked doctors.
"They just can't believe it. From the ICU to he's about to move out today or tomorrow to a regular room." said Green's mother Latasha Jefferson.
Green's coach at Lamar says he is great student and an all-around athlete.
Sports may still be his future but probably not football.
His parents say they're overwhelmed by the support they are getting, including from folks who've set up an internet fundraising page for their medical bills.
