The incident happened three weeks ago just outside the front door of the main public library in Denton.
Robert Mitchell and Laura Douglas helped the man sitting on the bench, keeled over and unconscious. The two managers refresh their training in CPR every two years and there is also an AED device at the library.
“I could tell at that point he wasn’t breathing,” Mitchell said, adding that the man was purple when he came up to him. “We needed to start doing some compressions and see if I could help revive him.”
Douglas said her training helped her use the AED while another coworker called 911.
“I don’t know what was going on around me, I just opened it took the parts out and stuck them on him and told everybody to stand back,” Douglas said
Paramedics arrived shortly after and took over. But it would be another two days before Mitchell and Douglas would learn the man they helped survived.
Now the city of Denton will officially honor the two for their text book response to a life-threatening ordeal.
“It was just doing the right thing by somebody who needed help.”
