20:36Now PlayingGrand Traverse Sheriff's Office will host a media briefing on the Walmart stabbing attack in Traverse City, Michigan.
Just before 5 p.m. Saturday, several people were stabbed at Walmart in Traverse City.
The suspect, a 42-year-old Michigan man, used a "standard" folding knife, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office.
Police said he acted alone.
Police said that all the victims were taken to Munson Medical Center, where "many" of them remain in serious or critical condition.
A statement from Munson confirmed there were 11 victims brought to the medical center.
"We can confirm that 11 victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center. As a result, our Emergency Department is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients," they said. "We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the best possible care for those impacted. We ask for the public’s patience and understanding as we manage this increased demand."
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Micheal D. Shea confirmed that there were 11 victims, six men and five women, in the incident.
"Initially it started near the checkout counter," Shea said during a press conference.
Shea said it was "very uncommon" for an incident like this to happen in their area.
"Unfortunately, no one is immune," he said. "Based on the information we have at this time, it appears they were random acts."
Shea said that a citizen inside the store helped to apprehend the suspect, but that he wasn't going to release more information on that at this time.
The Michigan State Police said that a suspect was in custody, and details are "limited" at this time.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office are the lead investigators for the case.
A Walmart corporate spokesperson, Joe Pennington, said by email that the company was "working with police and defer questions to them right now."
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also spoke about the incident in a post on X.
"I’m in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City. Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect," she wrote.
