Affectionately known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Opal Lee’s individual walking campaigns famously helped push the federal government to officially recognize June 19th as a national holiday in 2021. This year’s celebration carries extra significance as the North Texas activist celebrates her milestone 100th birthday year alongside coordinated satellite walks taking place in cities nationwide. The symbolic 2.5-mile distance honors the two and a half years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to finally reach enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865.
