2:19Now PlayingMore than a year and a half ago, New York instituted sweeping bail reform. But the debate over its impact on New York City has only grown more intense. Many in the law enforcement community blame the change in the law for the spike in violent crime in 2020.
Retired NYPD Lt. Dave Boehm says criminals are taking advantage of the new rules banning cash bail for most misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies.
But Lauren-Brooke Eisen of the Brennan Center for Justice says the NYPD's own statistics for the first half of 2020 suggest bail reform played no role in the surge of shootings during that time.
