Meteorologists say wind chills could range from -10 to -30 in some areas, with frostbite possible in under 30 minutes and hypothermia also a concern. Winds were reported gusting into the 40–60 mph range in spots, making it feel even colder than the air temperature.
The gusty conditions could also knock down trees and power lines, leading to outages. Pepco reported more than 1,000 customers affected in parts of D.C. and Maryland, with some estimated restorations listed for Sunday afternoon. Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers if you must go out, and take steps to protect your home during the deep freeze—such as shutting off exterior hose bibs to prevent frozen pipes.
