Cardinals center Easton Sorensen signed with University of Jamestown to become the first student coach at the liberal arts college in North Dakota. During his junior year and into the fall of his senior year, Sorensen had been communicating with coaches at multiple divisions of the NCAA and NAIA -- to play.
He had lost vision in a hit during his junior year and was diagnosed with trauma-induced cataracts, but cleared for his senior season. He took another hit in a preseason scrimmage and lost vision in his left eye. The next day, a medical evaluation discovered something that would change his life forever. He had chiari malformation, a condition where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. Often undetected, it can cause paralysis and even death. That's exactly what forced the 17-year-old to grow up faster than your typical teenager.
