1:02Now PlayingToday, November 10, marks the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald's sinking and the loss of 29 crew members.
The last successful dive to the 535-foot deep wreck occurred in 1995 using a Newtsuit, an atmospheric diving suit, to recover the ship's bell.
The Canadian government has not approved a dive permit in 30 years, largely because the families successfully lobbied to protect the site from disturbance. As a result, the deep-water wreck remains untouched, ensuring the wreck site is respected as a permanent grave.
