2:28Now PlayingA federal appeals court has ruled that the Trump administration holds the legal authority to detain immigrants without the possibility of bond.
The decision, issued Wednesday by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, reverses previous rulings by federal district judges in Minnesota who found that detainees were being wrongfully held without hearings during Operation Metro Surge.
A three-judge panel of Republican appointees issued the split decision, siding with the administration's argument that it can hold immigrants regardless of their location or length of residency in the country.
With so many habeas cases being filed across the country, many legal experts predict the issue will ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
