1:31Now PlayingMalicious cyber activity has been detected at more than 30 community water systems across Minnesota. The attacks targeted technology used by operators to remotely monitor and control equipment.
U.S. officials reportedly suspect Iran-linked hackers may be responsible, according to a preliminary assessment. Investigators have not determined with certainty who carried out the attacks, and Minnesota officials have not formally attributed the activity to a specific actor.
State, local and federal agencies are working to contain the threat, assess its impact and restore normal operations. Officials say there are currently no confirmed effects on water service and no requests for residents to change their drinking-water use.
