0:30Now PlayingThe United Kingdom’s Chester Zoo recently announced the birth of an anoa, the smallest species of wild cattle, which are native to the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi and Buton, according to the zoo.
This footage shows mom Darcy with her calf, a female named Mentari. The calf stands at 50 cm (about 20 inches) tall.
“The anoa calf, whose first steps were captured on hidden CCTV cameras, has left her den and embarked on her very first outdoor adventure – with the moment caught on camera,” the zoo said in a press release. “Conservationists at the zoo say the new arrival is vitally important to the future of her species, as conservationists from around the globe work to try and save it from extinction.”
The International Union for Conservation of Nature list the species as endangered on their Red List.
“Very little is known about these magnificent mammals as the species is solitary, secretive, silent and they live alone or in pairs, rather than in herds,” the zoo wrote.
