We’re told democracy gives power to the people. So why do the rich always seem to win?

In this clip, political theorist Camila Vergara explains how what we call “democracy” often works as rule for the rich, not the many. She calls it systemic corruption – not a few bad politicians, but a whole legal and constitutional setup designed to keep wealth and power concentrated at the top.

Drawing on history from ancient Rome, Salvador Allende’s Chile, and post-apartheid South Africa, she shows how:

• Constitutions, property law, and trade agreements lock in oligarchic power

• Land, copper, and other commons are taken from the many and held by a few

• The Global South is actually a net creditor to the Global North

• Words like “property,” “democracy,” and even “genocide” get weaponized to protect wealth instead of people
