One way by which such collective thinking is imposed is via a shared common dress code. This is true of various Abrahamic religious traditions (e.g., the Hasidim, nuns, women who don the burqa or niqab) as well as of atheist political totalitarian ideologies (e.g., Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution). No to individuality...even when it comes to sartorial decisions!
