For four and a half years, Scott Scurlock — known to the FBI as Hollywood — ran the most disciplined bank robbery operation the Pacific Northwest had ever seen. Theatrical prosthetics. Vault takeovers planned two months out. A two-way radio system run from a parked van while Scurlock worked the vault. Nineteen robberies. Over a million dollars. And a crew that studied the FBI the same way the FBI studied them — including hiring someone to follow the lead investigator for two weeks trying to find something on him.
On this episode of Gold Shields, retired FBI agent Shawn Johnson — who built the case and ran the Puget Sound Violent Crimes Task Force — sits down with Stephen Myers, the man who ran the scanner outside every one of those banks. They haven't been on opposite sides for thirty years. They drove up from North Carolina and Virginia to do this together.
Dan and Tom take them through all of it: how Scurlock's operation evolved from teller drawers to vault takeovers; how Johnson went proactive and planted electronic trackers in sixty Seattle bank branches; how Myers monitored police frequencies so closely he recognized dispatchers by voice. They get into the Thanksgiving Eve final robbery, the low-speed pursuit in a Seattle hailstorm, the two shootings, the nineteen-acre property in Olympia, and the three-story treehouse sixty feet up in the trees. And they get into what it felt like to find Scott Scurlock dead in a camper on Thanksgiving afternoon — with no party left to throw and nothing to celebrate.
Shawn Johnson spent years hunting Hollywood. Stephen Myers spent years keeping him safe. Now they're telling the same story from both ends.
