BACKGROUND:
The State of New Mexico charged Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter of Halyna Hutchens. In this context, involuntary manslaughter occur if a person is engaging in a lawful act but unintentionally kills someone by being negligent or not exercising due care. Involuntary manslaughter is classified as a fourth-degree felony with sentencing up to 18 months in prison and probation.
WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY:
State and Defense gave their opening Statements. State called four witnesses. Most of the testimony was from police responding to the shooting with a heavy focus on their bodycam footage displaying Halyna being treated and transported toward a medical facility. Additionally, there was evidence indicating that the set was maintained chaotically and police struggled with safeguarding evidence. Crime Scene Technician Marissa Poppell explained about live bullets being found among props on set.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Court broke before Defense had an opportunity to cross-examine Poppell. The trial will commence with that cross-exam as the State tries to establish that Baldwin's actions were criminally reckless.
TRIAL LENGTH:
The Court informed potential jurors they should anticipate a trial in excess of one week.
