as posted by the channelWhat makes the Bible authoritative? This question, and others like it, often come up in Protestant vs. Catholic debates. On the one hand, it would seem that the church, in compiling the canon, has authority over the Bible. This is repeated often by Catholic Apologists, and many Protestants struggle to answer this question. However, for Protestants, the Bible is intrinsically authoritative because of its nature as theopneustos, or, "inspired." So, who's right about the Bible, Catholics or Protestants?
In this video, I give a 4 point overview of John Calvin's case for the authority of the Bible as intrinsic, rather than conferred by the Church. The reason for pulling from Calvin is that many Protestants have lost their historic moorings, and Calvin is really the headwater from which Protestant theology flows. Whether Catholic or Protestant, you might not agree with this case, but my goal is that by the end of the video you would have a better understanding of the historic Protestant case for the authority of the Bible.
The argument can be laid out as follows:
1) Scripture is inherently authoritative by nature of its status as inspired by God.
2) Scripture is self-attesting to its authority, given the work of the Holy Spirit.
3) Any external criteria for authority placed upon the Bible diminishes the Bible's authority.
4) The Church does not give the Bible authority but merely recognizes the authority of the Bible.
