as posted by the channelIn this #shorts, we're discussing St. Catherine of Siena, and one key theme from her magnum opus, The Dialogue: self-knowledge. For Catherine, the path to union with God begins with self-knowledge. This self-knowledge must always be "seasoned with knowledge of God" and thus it is two-fold: one the one hand, we see ourselves and our own sinfulness, causing contempt for our sensual passions, and on the other hand, we see God's love for us and his surpassing goodness. Together these produce a profound humility which leads to prayer and a desire to love God with the love that he has given to us. However, God loves us with no expectation of reciprocity, and we can't love God in this same way because we depend on him for existence. What's the answer? God has given us neighbors so that we can give them the love that we owe to God. In so doing, we unite our wills to God and experience true union with God which is the ultimate goal of the Christian life.
