We are finite and God is infinite -- how than can we speak intelligently of God? Is theology a hopeless endeavor?

Throughout the Christian tradition, theologians have wrestled with this question. On the one hand, Christians believe that God has revealed himself in the person of Jesus Christ. On the other hand, Christians maintain that human words and concepts inevitably fall short when trying to articulate the essence of God. So, where does that leave us?

In this video, I look at two ways Christians have sought to approach this: apophatic theology and the principle of analogy.

Apophatic theology is an approach to theology in which we say what God is not, rather than what God is. The principle of analogy, or, "analogical predication," is the idea that we can say what God is like, but not what God is.

By examining these two approaches, we're led to recognize a need for theological humility while simultaneously not despairing that we can't know anything at all about God.
