Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign visits have once again come under the spotlight after the Centre revealed that nearly ₹74.5 crore was spent on the Prime Minister’s overseas visits in 2026 so far. The figures were shared by the Ministry of External Affairs in the Rajya Sabha.
According to the government data, expenditure on PM Modi’s foreign visits has increased significantly over the past few years. The reported expenditure was around ₹36 crore in 2021, ₹55 crore in 2022, ₹93 crore in 2023, ₹109 crore in 2024 and more than ₹180 crore in 2025. The 2026 figure of approximately ₹74.58 crore is provisional and subject to final settlement of bills.
The disclosure has triggered a fresh political discussion over the cost of the Prime Minister’s foreign travel. What is the purpose of these overseas visits? How much does the government spend on international engagements? What economic and diplomatic benefits does India gain from these trips?
The government has also highlighted India’s foreign investment inflows in response to questions about the Prime Minister’s foreign visits. However, the reported USD 381.8 billion FDI received between April 2021 and December 2025 was not specifically attributed to individual Prime Ministerial trips.
In this video, we look at the latest figures, the year-wise increase in expenditure, the political debate surrounding PM Modi’s foreign tours, and the larger questions about the cost and benefits of India’s international diplomacy.
