Dr. Rachel Levine, a former Pennsylvania health secretary, and Mr. Biden’s pick to be assistant secretary of health was questioned by the Senate during her confirmation hearing.
But Dr. Levine’s confirmation hearing briefly turned combative on Thursday, when Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, opened his questioning demanding to know whether the nominee supported gender reassignment surgery and hormone therapy for minors.
