Moses Sithole the ABC Killer Part 2

The ABC Killer, The South African Strangler, The Gauteng Killer.

These are the names given to the most prolific serial killer in South Africa, Moses Sithole, who was sentenced to 2410 years in prison in 1995 for the murders of at least 37 women and 1 child (76 suspected murders), and for the violent s/a of at least 40 women. The crimes were so shocking, even in 3rd world South Africa with its high crime rates, that former President Nelson Mandela personally visited the killing fields where Sithole’s victims were found to decipher what they were dealing with. Fields in Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland (ABC) were scattered with the decomposing remains of black women aged 19-43, all strangled with items of clothing and in escalating brutality.

He was known to taunt the media, the police, and the family members of the victims and became such an interesting case that former FBI’s lead criminal profiler who coined the term “serial killer”, Robert Ressler, flew out to South to meet with Micki Pistorius, South Africa’s first criminal profiler, to try to profile and catch this killer. As with many serial killer cases, Moses was incarcerated for s/a before he became a serial killer, and he was active between 1994 and 1995 before he was apprehended and sentenced; serial killers rarely get away with their crimes for very long, even though not all are caught, and some do manage to stay under the radar for decades.
